QUT Outback Road Trip Inspires Regional Communities Through Robotics and Innovation
28 May 2026
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) recently embarked on an outback road trip across Central and Western Queensland, visiting Country Universities Centre Mount Isa, Country Universities Centre Hughenden and Country Universities Centre RAPAD CWQ – and alongside them for the journey was a very special guest, QUTie.
QUTie, the humanoid robot developed by QUT’s Centre for Robotics, sparked curiosity and meaningful conversations in communities across the region about the future possibilities of robotics, artificial intelligence and design in solving real-world challenges faced by outback communities.
QUT first stopped in at CUC RAPAD CWQ’s Longreach location and then continued to Winton, where QUTie met with staff, students and community members connected to the Centre. Friendly locals gathered as QUTie made its way through town, before the visit concluded with a community event at the iconic Royal Theatre. The evening sparked engaging discussions about technology adoption and how robotics and design could help address some of the unique problems remote and rural Australia faces.
At CUC Hughenden, QUTie had the room buzzing. From curious students to community members eager to snap a photo alongside the robot, the visit generated excitement and discussion about innovation and the future of regional Queensland.
CUC Hughenden Centre Manager, Jo Young, reflected on the impact of the visit, saying:
“… it wasn’t just about the robot. The event was a genuine celebration of what’s possible for regional Queensland.”

QUT also visited CUC Mount Isa, where the team connected with Centre staff, current and prospective students to discuss opportunities in education, law and business, as well as emerging fields including AI, humanoid robotics, healthcare innovation, fashion and wearable technologies. Community members also learned more about QUT’s new Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice Bachelor of Arts program.

The road trip showcased more than just cutting-edge technology. QUTie’s adventures and learnings will not only shape future research but highlighted the real-world uses, limitations and opportunities technology such as this can have in regional communities.
Supporting the journey was a QUT delegation of senior leaders, including Rowena Barrett, Nick Brown, Lisa Scharoun, Jonathan Roberts and Dipa Sarkar, whose participation reinforced QUT’s commitment to regional engagement and innovation.
